Building surveys
As built surveys are not just confined to buildings. The survey shown here is of a landfill site that has been prepared with a clay seal and drainage to prevent contamination of the local watertable. It is a requirement of the Environment Agency that every stage of the preparation of the landfill is surveyed.
The purpose of this survey was to prepare a plan of the roof and the top floors of several blocks of flats in order to evaluate the feasibility of adding additional storeys.
This survey was carried out in order to plan the replacement of various roof elements of an historic building. The beams and rafters were at irregular intervals and the 3D modelling allowed each element to be prepared to the appropriate specification.
Anybody can measure a building when the rooms conform to a rectangular model with uniform wall thickness. When the building is curved and the walls are not uniform (especially some of the terraced buildings in London with basements that extend under the pavement) it is not so easy. Meridian Surveys specialise in surveying non-standard buildings.
Meridian undertakes surveys and 3D modelling together with architectural visuals in order to assist with right to light planning issues and resolving disputes.
We produce 3D models to allow architects to address light issues both for design and for planning applications.
We are quite used to preparing plans for architects and developers to use as a basis for their "grand designs." More and more we are also being asked to prepare interior elevations for designers to effectively use as a canvass for their design work.
Interior elevations are quite simple, although they take a lot of work to prepare (which, no doubt, is why we are asked to do them!). This image shows the main features as such as doors and windows as well as the position of radiators, electrical fitting and other salient detail.
This measured building survey was for the accommodation block of a boarding school. Because of the age and configuration of the building we measured it using a total station augmented with Disto and caliper.
This was a measured building survey of a terraced town house on five floors. In addition to the floor plans we surveyed the loft space and provided two cross-sections.
